All charitable organisations are required by law to register with the Charities register. Basically, a charity is defined as any organisation which is providing a service to the community on a non profit-making basis. Organisations supplying education, community supports or promoting the arts (pipe bands) are now deemed to be charities under the Act. The “Register of Charities” is established by the Charities Regulatory Authority (CRA) pursuant to S.39 of the Charities Act of 2009.
If your annual income as a band is below €10,000 , there is a simplified registration process.
If your annual income is more than €10,000 , you will need to follow the standard approach.
Either way, band secretaries are now advised to visit: http://www.charitiesregulatoryauthority.ie
You can access all the information you need from there.
You first have to login and state your intention to register. You will then receive an e-mail with login and security details.
I believe that bands will not be able to get a licence for Church Gate Collections , Lotteries, etc. without a Registration number. This will also likely apply to any grants being applied for from County Councils, Arts Council, etc.
